Remembering Kenneth H. Porter, D.D.S.

The loss of a UT family member is always difficult to accept and endure, especially one so highly respected and admired as Ken Porter, D.D.S., professor emeritus and clinical professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials. Porter passed away suddenly May 19 while vacationing in Colorado.
To honor this outstanding gentleman and role model, The Dr. Kenneth H. Porter Operative Dentistry Scholarship Fund has been established. Contributions may be directed to this fund at

New School of Public Health Dean

Roberta B. Ness, M.D., M.P.H., a distinguished researcher, educator and physician who specializes in women’s health, has been named dean of The University of Texas School of Public Health, effective Jan. 1, 2009. Ness will succeed Guy S. Parcel, Ph.D., who has led the UT School of Public Health since 2005.

Food Drive

Coordinators are needed for the annual UT Health Science Center food drive benefiting the Houston Food Bank. The drive, which will take place Monday, June 16 – Monday, June 30, is held in conjunction with KHOU-TV’s “Spirit of Texas” Food Drive, the Texas Medical Center, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, and the Kroger Company.

Distinguished Professional Woman Award

The Committee on the Status of Women is accepting nominations for the 2008 Distinguished Professional Woman Award. The woman nominated must:

  • Exemplify a professional woman
  • Be an outstanding achiever in Houston, in Texas or the nation
  • Make significant contributions to her profession
  • Demonstrate a pioneering spirit
  • Support women as a mentor and positive role model
